What is the legit “free credit report” website?

Momto2inFL asked:

You hear from all sorts of places about getting your free credit report, but you just have to sign up for a free trial. And there’s always that catch. I saw something yesterday on the TV about a free credit report being offered and the offer expires March 31st? I can’t remember who it was.

Also, that offer aside, what is the legit place to get access to your once a year, free credit report? I don’t trust half of what I read….

Thanks!

Bessie

The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that U.S. consumers be entitled to a free credit report each year. The government’s goal is to make sure that consumers stay informed, fight identity theft, and get fair treatment. This is the government mandated website where you can get 1 free credit report from the 3 agencies for free in one year:

You are entitled to one free credit report per year. You go to freecreditreport.com and it will have you create a log in user name and password. It will allow you to just get your yearly free one or offer other things. Just choose the free one. It will ask questions to make sure you are you, then it will let you view it and print it. It lets you get one from all three credit companies. I did this a couple of weeks ago.

Go to annualcreditreport.com. That is the ONLY one recognized by the Federal Trade Commission. Other websites that have you enter in any credit card info for a “free” report are probably not legit.

I would just pay the $15 to get the real credit report. This way you can trust and understand what you read. The free credit reports are not as detailed as the real ones and if theres something you dont understand, its hard to figure it out.

    The three credit bureaus are:
    Trans Union
    Equifax
    Experian

A credit report costs about $10-15 each, and there is support if you have questions. I think it is worth the money to find out about your credit. I pay about $45 to find out from all three every year. My credit score is 750.
